COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The City of Colorado Springs is alerting drivers to a closure on Jet Wing Drive starting on Thursday.
According to officials, Jet Wing Drive will close at South Academy Boulevard from 7 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15, through 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17. They say the work will be so crews can inspect a sewer pipe that is more than 50 years old.
The city says the work is part of the South Academy Boulevard Improvements Project. The closure won't block driveways, and drivers can still get to Jet Wing Drive from Hancock Expressway. The city says it has also worked with the fire department to help maintain emergency access.
Detours are set up during the construction. The north detour asks drivers from South Academy Boulevard to turn east on Hancock Expressway, then south on Jet Wing Drive. The south detour will have drivers take Boychuk Avenue north to Hancock Expressway, then go east on Jet Wing Drive. Drivers on South Academy Boulevard can take the same north detour to get to Jet Wing Drive.
The city says drivers should make sure to slow down, follow signs and allow extra time for travel. They also suggest using alternate routes during the construction when possible.
The project, which is part of the voter-approved Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority project, should improve safety, pedestrian access and drainage, according to the city. They say it is the first major reconstruction on South Academy Boulevard since it first opened in 1969.
